Opinion | ‘Hold On for a Little While Longer’


To the Editor:Re “Biden Implores States to Revive Mask Mandate” (front page, March 30):President Biden and Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, call upon state officials and citizens to continue to use masks and social distancing to curb the virus’s troubling upswing just as vaccination schedules move forward. Let us appeal to grandparents (I am one) and other relatives and friends — all the brokenhearted coast to coast who have not been able to see grandchildren and other family members — to take up their courage and broadcast their ability to “hold on for a little while longer” (Dr. Walensky’s words). Such a decision might help turn Dr. Walensky’s narrative of “impending doom” and serve, ultimately, as an ethical model for those grandchildren. Does forcing mothers on welfare to leave infants as young as six weeks old so they can “be productive” reflect the kind of world we want?
